I don't know about you, but trying to manage historical email and conversation in an insane process. I get 300-500 emails a day and because I use Outlook, I can only keep about one quarters worth of email in an archive file. That means I have 4 archive files a year and currently about 10 years with of information. Each archive file has its own folder hierarchy, so trying to find all of the email for a single customer could easily mean looking for it in over 10 hierarchies. There needs to be a better way!
Add to that problem, now I about 1/3 of my communications is coming to me outside of my email. Besides the obvious issue on phone calls and voice mails, many of my messages are now coming from Twitter direct messages, blog responses, and messages from social networks like Facebook and Linked-In. You can see why this frustrates me so much.
This week, I started a new project whose goal it is to solve this problem with a new customer of mine called Iconix. We have some really cool ideas about how we are going to do this and with this post, I am looking for even more cool ideas. The basic idea is that this will be a cloud application that will connect to all your forms of communications, including: email, voice mail, Twitter, social applications, and SMS. It will then use a very powerful "cloud intelligence" system to automatically read the messages, pull out important information, tag them, group them into conversation, and organize them. Finally, it will create extremely powerful view of the information so that you will have a strong understanding of all of your communications.
I can't share a lot more about the project yet, but we are looking for people to join our usability group. If you have this problem, an interest in this area, and would like early participation in what is going to be a very cool system, let me know and I will get you involved.
If you have a wish list of things you would like to see in a solution like this, let me know that too. We expect the first part of this solution to be available this fall.
