A lot of people are confused about Twitter. With over 9M new users in March alone, Twitter has definitely "jumped the shark" and has literally bypassed the early adopter and gone straight to mainstream. Since early adopters, play a crucial role in the technology adoption curve, this is probably something that is going to bite Twitter in the long run.
As these new users come into the Twittersphere, they have some real misconceptions. First, you should stop tweeting "I am going to the store", "I am going to the gym", etc. This is just noise and probably the only people that care are people that want to come to your house and rob you.
So what do you Tweet. Twitter has become the Bloomberg terminal for Tech. I am very close to the innovative entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley and I often see things on Twitter 2-3 weeks before they hit the industry blogs like TechCrunch and months before they hit the mainline press. In addition, not only is the information very timely, it comes with key industry players opinions of the news.
So if you want to be "In the Know" for technology, download TweetDeck and create columns for @timoreilly, @kevinrose, @JasonCalacanis, @techcrunch, @Scobleizer, @guykawasaki, @god, @jowyang, @loiclemeur, @garyvee. If you follow the top 10 things that these top Twitters talk about, you will have your finger on what is going on in Tech.
Later this week, I am going to Blog about Clikball. Join it now if you want to quickly see how to take advantage of Twitter. If you want to follow me on Twitter, I am @hightechexec.
